The weekend of June 15-16 marks the 27th Annual Pasadena Chalk Festival at The Paseo. Over 600 skilled chalk artists from all over the world come together to celebrate the unique art form. The festival offers visitors an opportunity to experience art on the Paseo’s famous plaza for free.

    Madonnari

The Pasadena Chalk Festival places over 25,000 sticks of pastel chalks in the hands of hundreds of Madonnari (Italian for street painter) to spend the weekend creating spectacular murals on concrete canvases throughout the shopping plaza that stretches over three city blocks. Many artistic styles are represented in the Pasadena Chalk Festival: classical, contemporary, whimsical, socially relevant. Teams and individual artists represent schools, creative companies, cultural organizations and artistic families.

    2019 Highlights

    Entertainment

Music and entertainment are scheduled throughout the weekend; children can create their own art on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.; and the Pasadena Police Department puts on a Classic Car Show on Sunday.

    Animation Alley

Animation Alley is an area spotlighting some of the top and upcoming animators and graphic designers from California; master chalk artists take inspiration from some of the work produced in Animation Alley.

Light Bringer Project – Silent Auction

The Pasadena Chalk Festival at The Paseo, benefits the community arts programs of the Light Bringer Project. Light Bringer Project is a nonprofit, Pasadena-based arts organization founded in 1990 by residents who were exploring the historic contributions that artists, architects and craftsmen made to the local environment. Inspired by these achievements, its founders imagined ways to bring more of today’s artists and their creative resources into the mainstream of community life. Today, the organization is widely known for its arts and educational programs provided to under-served youth in Pasadena and the Greater Los Angeles area.

The Light Bringer Project will use the proceeds from individual donations; grants from local civic organizations, corporations and foundations; and the 2019 Pasadena Chalk Festival’s art gallery sales and silent auction to fund several important programs, all provided at no cost to public schools in the area. Last year, the Pasadena Chalk Festival raised over $20,000 for this worthy cause, funds which helped the Light Bringer Project reach more than 1,700 students from 10 low-income public schools in Los Angeles County with its programs and services.
