20 Feet From Stardom
Claudia Lennear’s day job is teaching Spanish in a Los Angeles high school, but her roots trace back to rock & roll. She was an Ikette for The Ike & Tina Turner Revue, where she performed as a backup dancer for Tina Turner and provided backup vocals — she went on to sing backup for Joe Cocker and other big acts of the time. Claudia left an impression on Mick Jagger and David Bowie so lasting that it inspired both of them to write a song, the Rolling Stones’ Brown Sugar and Bowie’s Lady Grinning Soul. In more recent times, Claudia was featured in 20 Feet From Stardom, an Oscar-winning documentary about backup singers.

New Ash Grove Players
The Ash Grove was a legendary folk and blues music club on Melrose Avenue, where the Hollywood Improv exists today. It opened in 1958 and had a 15-year run before closing after a fire. While the brick and mortar Ash Grove is no more, the club’s legacy lives on by way of a folk and blues repertoire band called The New Ash Grove Players; 3,000 hours of archival footage; and a documentary produced in 2008.
