The Gamble House Book Club: The Grapes of Wrath
During The Gamble House Book Club's Dust Jacket Journeys, May's reading is The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.
Each gathering will offer an opportunity for examining diverse perspectives, sharing discoveries, and the exchange of ideas which make for a meaningful reading experience. To mark the 100th anniversary of Route 66, the books selected this quarter explore and deconstruct the significance of road trips in American family life. We look forward to sharing a literary journey to new perspectives and new understandings one book at a time.
Set during the Great Depression, "The Grapes of Wrath" focuses on the Joads, a family of tenant farmers driven from their Oklahoma home by drought, economic hardship, agricultural industry changes, and bank foreclosures forcing tenant farmers out of work. Due to their nearly hopeless situation, and in part because they are trapped in the Dust Bowl, the Joads set out for California on the Mother Road (Route 66), along with thousands of other migrant workers seeking jobs, land, dignity, and a future. This classic of American literature is renowned for its powerful depiction of poverty, social injustice, and the resilience of the human spirit.
