Pasadena is home to many creative professionals who have taken their expertise to Instagram, Pinterest and blogs — these creatives are drawn to this area by institutions like ArtCenter, The Walt Disney Company, and the Entertainment Industry of Los Angeles. We are joining forces with some of our favorite collaborators to bring you a new blog series, with the goal of offering a glimpse of our town through the eyes of the people who live and work here. This new series is entitled “x Visit Pasadena,” taking inspiration from the Fashion Industry — when referring to a collaboration between a designer and a fashion house it is stylized with x between the two brands.
Pasadena Charm x Visit Pasadena
In our first collaboration, Taryn Rothstein, the tastemaker behind Pasadena Charm fills us in on the best photo ops around town. While these eight backdrops will make an enviable Instagram feed, it also takes us to inspiring places throughout Pasadena that are often overlooked by travelers. Taryn’s lifestyle blog, Pasadena Charm, is a guide to the city focusing on local perspectives and emerging artists in and around Pasadena. Over the next year, we’ll share her favorite ways to explore Pasadena. Here is what Taryn has to say:
1 — ArtCenter College of Design
Art is everywhere — but especially at ArtCenter College of Design. The colorful graffiti wall shown above was designed by Risk Rock, and it works well for adding a pop of color on your Instagram feed. You would never guess that this wall is in their parking lot, it is located on Raymond Avenue at ArtCenter’s South Campus.
Address: 897 S. Raymond Avenue, Pasadena, CA 91105
Tip: Arrive after 4 PM on Fridays, or early in the mornings in order to get a free parking space for your picture.
2 — “Pasadena Wall” on South Lake Avenue
Those feeling more adventurous can hop onto this wall for a truly unique and memorable Pasadena snapshot. The wall is located on bustling South Lake Ave, right between LA Fitness and Souplantation. I love the art deco font, and it’s the perfect platform for a solo or group shot.
Address: 201 S Lake Ave, Pasadena, California 91101
3 — City Hall
Located in the heart of Pasadena, the iconic city hall serves as the perfect destination for a quintessential Pasadena photo opp. City hall famously and fictitiously served as Pawnee, Indiana’s city hall in the hit NBC show, Parks and Recreation. The same Beaux-Arts dome can be seen through Sheldon’s apartment window on CBS’ cult TV show, The Big Bang Theory, making it a novel destination for pop culture fans. Pasadena City Hall is located on Garfield Avenue at Holly Street, a cul-de-sac in front of city hall allows plenty of room to shoot a signature Pasadena photo.
Address: 100 Garfield Ave, Pasadena, California 91101
4 — Ginger Market Wall
This wall is Insta-mommy friendly, it is located on the side of Ginger Market on Michigan Avenue. Snap a pic while having lunch alfresco, taking advantage of Pasadena’s lovely weather. For my fellow moms, grab a latte at Ginger Market, get a cute photo of you and your child, and head over to Grant Park across the street for fun in the sun.
Address: 217 S Michigan Ave, Pasadena, California 91106
5 — Afters Ice Cream Wall
Everyone’s ice cream shop.
From a first date to a family of five, there is something for everyone at Afters. It is open from noon to midnight every day of the week, and they blast a great soundtrack. Afters serves as meeting ground for people from all walks of life. Afters is located on Green Street, the wall is outside, around the corner from the entrance. Go there, grab a photo and then enjoy a milky bun or ice cream cone.
Address: 1265 E Green St, Pasadena, California 91106
6 — Le Muse
Le Muse Coffee and Wine Bar, located on Madison Avenue, offers extremely unique interior walls with interesting graffiti created by artist Ken Moffatt. Its beautiful digs make for a glamorous instagram photo, and best of all, enjoy a glass of wine to spark your creative juices. Be sure to take a look inside their restrooms, they feature one-of-a-kind graffiti on the walls worthy of another picture.
Address: 101 S Madison Ave, Pasadena, California 91101
7 — Lavender and Honey Espresso Bar
Located on Washington Boulevard near Bungalow Heaven, Lavender and Honey Espresso Bar is the perfect place to catch up with a friend or curl up with a book on their bay window while enjoying a latte and toast. Their signature honeycomb decor is quite recognizable, capture it in the background of your photo and friends will know where you are.
Address: 1383 E Washington Blvd, Pasadena, California 91104
8 — Old Pasadena’s Historic Alleys
Grab a coffee from Intelligentsia then use the back entrance to head into the maze of brick alleys from the 1800s. You’ll find a chalkboard sign displaying The Pie Hole‘s slice of the day, and murals discretely hiding on the brick and mortar.
Address: 74 Exchange Alley, Pasadena, California 91103
