A Head Full of Dreams

This weekend the Rose Bowl Stadium was taken over by Coldplay, who is currently on tour in support of their latest album, “A Head Full of Dreams.” The band’s performance left a long-lasting mark on the legendary stadium and the thousands of entranced fans who were in attendance.

Theatrics

The show featured a fireworks show, an explosion of confetti, and every member of the audience wore bracelets that lit up in particular colors during the show. The most nostalgic moment perhaps came when Coldplay performed their first worldwide hit, “Yellow,” all of the bracelets lit up in the color yellow.

Prince Tribute

During Coldplay’s performance on Sunday, fans were treated to a surprise guest, host of The Late Late Show James Corden joined the band to cover “Nothing Compares 2 U” in tribute to the late Prince. Corden’s guest appearance was on the eve of his 38th birthday, after the Prince tribute the band presented Corden with a birthday cake while Chris Martin sang “Happy Birthday to You.”

Nothing Compares 2 U

Prince, who passed away earlier this year, wrote the song, however its biggest success was Sinead O’Connor’s 1990 cover.

Carpool Karaoke

This was Martin and Corden’s second collaboration, Chris Martin appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden in February of this year for a popular skit called Carpool Karaoke. The skit humorously fuses two things that most Angelenos can relate to, sitting in traffic and singing in the car. The premise of the skit is based on Corden’s morning commute to work, he asks his famous guests to carpool with him in order to pass the time, and they inevitably belt out popular songs—songs which are almost always part of his guests’ own repertoire. In Chris Martin’s Carpool Karaoke episode, Corden finds Martin hitchhiking on this side of the road, he is trying to get to San Francisco to perform in the halftime show at Super Bowl 50.

Super Bowl Halftime Show

The grandeur of Super Bowl halftime shows trace back to the Rose Bowl Stadium. Up until 1993 halftime shows were subdued, the public noticeably lost interest in the game once the halftime show rolled around — fans left their seats and television viewers changed the channel. In an effort to reinvigorate interest, the NFL and NBC asked Michael Jackson to perform at Super Bowl XXVII which took place at Rose Bowl Stadium. Their tactic worked, the Super Bowl continues to present spectacular halftime shows each year, and it has become one the most viewed American television broadcasts each year.
