Old Pasadena Celebrates Day of the Dead
Celebrate Old Pasadena Day of the Dead with three days of family events. The celebrations include a tour of beautiful altars created by dozens of Old Pasadena businesses. These altars will be showcased for guests to admire during the self-guided Tour of Altars. The Day of the Dead Weekend will be filled with a salsa dance party, calavera face painting, and more. This will be Old Pasadena’s fourth year observing the colorful Mexican holiday.
Dia de Los Muertos
Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is celebrated in central and southern Mexico on November 1st and 2nd. This coincides with the Catholic holiday called All Souls’ Day and All Saints’ Day. These were combined along with the ancient beliefs of the indigenous people honoring their deceased loved ones. Colorful parties take place in cemeteries and elaborate ofrenda altars are created in homes to honor specific family members who have passed on. Beautiful altars are decorated with candles, flowers (marigolds), fruit, peanuts, plates of mole, stacks of tortillas and Day of the Dead bread called pan de muerto. The altars typically have lots of food, bottles of soda, water, and hot cocoa for the spirits. Toys and candies are left for the angelitos (little angels). Folk art skeletons and sugar skulls are also placed on altars. This is a playful and festive event where death is treated with humor, and the circle of life is celebrated.
Self Guided Tour
Beginning Friday, November 2nd, through Sunday, November 4th, take a self guided tour of altars throughout Old Pasadena. The altars range from traditional to contemporary as they commemorate and honor the spirits of loved ones and the dearly departed. A panel of judges will award prizes to various altars. Three community alters include Big Bang Theory Way, Indiana Colony, and CTRL Collective.
Salsa on the Alley
Taking place on Big Bang Theory Way, is a salsa dancing demonstration curated by La Junta. Live music will be performed by Cuba Rumba. Free Calavera face painting is also available. Festivities will take place Friday November 2nd.
Bring your friends and family to enjoy live music by Marimba Tropical. Free Calavera face painting will also be available. Festivities are to take place Saturday November 3rd to Sunday November 4th. Weekend fun will take place from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm.
